Borneo’s friendly locals have opened up their homes to foreign guests so they can have a taste of the village lifestyle to cherish for a lifetime.

Experiencing a homestay in a rural village in Sabah is perhaps one of the fastest and easiest ways to get to know the authentic Borneo.
You will also quickly establish a bond with their warm and welcoming families who will treat you like a member of the family.

  • Stay with a Kadazan family in their house. The Kadazans are an ethnic group indigenous to the state of Sabah in Malaysia
  • Spend one day on the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. The park offer white sands, azure waters and hiking trails
  • Explore Kinabalu Park. The park boasts the richest and most diverse assemblages of plants in the world

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Kota Kinabalu - Homestay Penampang

You will be picked up from Kota Kinabalu airport and transported to the homestay in Penampang. The rural area of Penampang is just 10 km from the city of Kota Kinabalu. The natural environment combined with the rich traditional cultures makes Penampang an interesting place to visit and to stay.

On arrival you will be warmly welcomed by the native Kadazan Family. Settle into the room and spend time with the local family. After lunch visit the pineapple and mushroom plantation to see the agricultural practices that native farmer adopts. After that learn how to prepare the local food. In the evening you will enjoy cultural dances and musical performance.

Overnight at the homestay (amenities in Bornean villages offer basic comforts).

LUNCH | DINNER

Day 2Homestay Penampang

Rise early this morning and enjoy the breakfast. Today you can explore the surrounding and spend some time at the Tagal River, trying your hand at riverside fishing. In the afternoon visit the Community Museum in Kampung (village) Pogunon. Here you can learn more about the culture of the native Kadazan.

Return to the homestay and after dinner, the native will entertain you with tales about local folklore.

Day 3Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Springs

After breakfast at the homestay proceed to Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Spring. You will be driven for 2.5 hours across mountainous Crocker Range with panoramic view of the countryside and soaring hills. En route to Kinabalu Park, visit the Nabalu Market where you can find local handicraft and tropical fruits.

Upon arrival in Poring take the 41m high canopy walk which offers a spectacular view of the rainforest and dip in a steaming Japanese style bathtub filled with running sulfured water rising from the earth’s depth. The trek for about 20 minutes to the Kipungit Waterfall and enjoy the tranquil and natural enviroment.

At the Poring Hot Springs, if you are lucky you may see a Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower, in bloom.

After the tour in Poring, transfer to your hotel in Kinabalu Park.

Day 4Kinabalu Park - Kota Kinabalu

After breakfast you will be taken to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon reaching the park, our guide will take on a trek along one of the many trails in the park. Continue to the Mountain Garden where you can see some of the more than 1000 species of orchids and as well as the endemic and medicinal plants found within the park. There is also a brief visit to the exhibition center before driving back to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 5Gaya and Mamutik Island

Today you will be picked up from your hotel and transferred to the jetty at the Jesselton Point where you will board a boat to the islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. This tour takes you to the most beautiful islands of the marine park; Gaya with its lush rainforest and Mamutik well known for the dazzling white beaches and crystal clear waters.

Upon arrival in Gaya, trek for about 1.5 hours through coastal vegetation, mangrove swamp and lowland dipterocarp forest. Along the way, the tour guide will brief you about the flora and fauna of this tropical island.

After Gaya, you will be transferred to Mamutik Island where you can go snorkelling over coral direct from the beach or explore the nature trails around the island. Enjoy the barbecue lunch by the beach spend the rest of the day at your leisure. You will be dropped back at your hotel at the end of the tour.

Transfer from your hotel to Kota Kinabalu airport.
