Day 1 Arrive in Kuching - sightseeing

Upon arrival in Kuching, you will be met at the airport and taken on a sightseeing tour of Kuching.

Tour highlights include Chinatown, the Cat Statue (Kuching means ‘Cat’ in Malay), the colourful Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, the Civic Centre Viewing platform and the world famous museum which displays some great tribal artifacts. Pass by the golden-domed city Mosque and through the Old Kuching, crammed with spice dealers and textile shops. Admire the colonial buildings of the White Rajah Era such as the Pavilion, the Square Tower, the Court House, the Charles Brooke Monument, the Astana and the Post Office.

Day 2Bako National Park

This morning you will be driven for about 1.5 hours to Bako Village where you will board the boat to Bako National Park. The cruise takes approximately 30 minutes (depending on the tide).

Bako offers a mix of coastal scenery, teeming rainforest and abundant wildlife. Sarawak’s premier wildlife location is one of the best places in Borneo to see proboscis monkeys. Other wildlife seen include leaf monkeys, long-tailed macaques, wild boars, flying squirrels, monitor lizards and several species of birds.

The park’s flora is rich and diverse and includes mangroves, strangling figs, carnivorous pitcher plants and symbiotic ant plants. Unique geological features mark the coastline, whilst well-marked trails lead to rugged jungle-covered hilltops and secluded beaches.

Day 3Lemanak River

Today you will travel to the remote Lemanak River to experience the culture of the native Iban people. You will be driven for about 4.5 hours through lush green countryside dotted with padi fields, pepper gardens, and rubber plantations, and flanked by rugged jungle-clad mountains. Along the way, stop off at the Serian farmer’s market, visit a pepper garden and view carnivorous pitcher plants. Stop for lunch at a roadside bazaar deep in Iban country.

Arrive at Lemanak jetty mid-afternoon for a longboat ride up the Lemanak River, passing through typical Borneo countryside with a longhouse tucked behind almost every bend in the river. Arrive at Ngemah Longhouse and visit the “entire village under one roof.” Dinner, featuring delicious fresh jungle produce. After dinner, we will proceed for some evening’s entertainment, including traditional dancing, music, games and a glass or two of tuak (rice wine) with the longhouse chief. The Iban are a fun-loving people, and visitors are expected to join in!

Overnight in the Longhouse. You will be spending your night at the ruai (the longhouse common room). As for the washroom / toilet facilities you will be sharing with the Ibans.


Day 4Lemanak River - Semenggoh Orangutan

After breakfast, enjoy a demonstration of the native activities such as blowpipe for hunting, followed by a short nature walk to learn about some local medicinal plants. Afterward, travel by longboat downriver and catch the coach back to Kuching.

Enroute visit Semenggoh Nature Reserve to see orangutans at their feeding time. This nature reserve provides a safe haven for rehabilitated orangutans who have been rescued from captivity.

Day 5Fly to Mulu National Park

Transfer to Kuching airport for your flight to Mulu.

Upon arrival at Mulu Airport by your guide and transfer to your hotel. Afternoon, proceed to Mulu National Park HQ for a visit to Deer and Lang’s Cave. Walk along the plant walk through the rainforest for about 3 km. Explore the largest cave passage in the world – Deer Cave and Lang’s Cave. Relax at the open air observatory for an opportunity witness the phenomenon exodus of bats out of the caves, spiraling high overhead and ascend to the sky where they will search for food.

Return to the Park HQ and transfer to your accommodation.

Day 6Mulu National Park

After breakfast takes a morning longtail boat ride to visit the Cave of the Winds with is tall, slender stalagmites, then on to the source of the Clearwater River, see the underground river and visit the dry passage of the Lady’s Cave. Swim at the Clearwater Spring.

After lunch return to your accommodation. The rest of the day is free at leisure.

Day 7Fly to Kota Kinabalu

Transfer to Mulu Airport for your flight to Kota Kinabalu.

Upon arrival in Kota Kinabalu you will be transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is free for your own leisure.

Day 8Gaya and Mamutik Island

Today visit the most beautiful islands in the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park. Gaya Island with its lush rainforest, and Mamutik Island, well known for the dazzling white sand beaches and crystal clear waters.

You will be transferred to Sutera Harbour’s Marina jetty, where you will board a boat for about 10-15 minutes. Upon arrival at Gaya, trek for about 1½-hour through coastal vegetation, mangrove swamp, and lowland dipterocarp forest. Our guide will explain to you about the flora and fauna of this tropical island.

After Gaya, head to Mamutik, one of the smaller among the five islands; nevertheless, it is endowed with rich coral life that surrounds the island. This is the place for diving and snorkel enthusiasts. Have a sumptuous lunch at Mamutik. Spend the rest of the day at leisure for swimming or snorkeling in the crystal clear waters before your return to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 9Kinabalu Park and Poring Hot Springs

Today, we will be picking you up from your hotel and take you on an enjoyable trip to Kinabalu Park and to Poring. Withing two and a half hours of travelling, you will get the chance to enjoy the marvellous, mountainous Crocker Range which gives a panoramic view of the countryside and its soaring hills. Get the chance to visit the Nabalu Market, an amazing place en route to Kinabalu Park, where you can find beautiful local handicrafts and exquisite tropical fruits.

Once you reach Poring, you will have to take a 41-meter high canopy walk which offers a wondrous view of the lush rainforests of the vicinity. You will also get the chance to have a dip in a steaming “Japanese Style” bathtub filled with running sulfured water rising from the earth’s depth. After the relaxing dip at the Japanese Style bathtub, you will have to go for another 20 minutes of trekking going to the Kipungit Waterfall and enjoy the tranquil and national environment that will give you an ambiance that will definitely take all your stress away. As a bonus, if you’re lucky, that is, you may also get the chance to see a Rafflesia, the world’s largest flower; in bloom. (Entrance fee/ticket to enter the private farm is not included and will be paid in the farm if there is a Rafflesia in bloom)

Leaving Poring, you will be travelling to a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy sightseeing and indulging yourself I a guided nature trek along one of the many trails in the park and discover the one of a kind and insectivorous pitcher plants and many other exotic plants in the Botanical Garden of the park.

After this enjoyable full day tour, you will be dropped back at your hotel.

Day 10Fly to Sandakan - Turtle Island

Transfer to Kota Kinabalu airport for a short flight to Sandakan.

On arrival transfer to Sim Sim jetty for a speedboat transfer to Selingan Turtle Island. Selingan has been designated a national park to protect the newly laid eggs and vulnerable hatchlings from predators. The journey to the island will take approximately one hour.

On arrival, leisure time to settle in your room, relax on the beach or explore the tropical island’s surrounding. In the evening, a park ranger will escort you to watch one of the giant sea turtle laying their eggs on the beach and the release of the baby turtles into the sea. Visitors are allowed to see only one turtle/ per night and turtle sightings can never be guaranteed. Please be prepared to stay up until 1 am or later in order to see the turtles on the beach.

Day 11Sepilok Orangutan - Kinabatangan River

Early morning, head back to Sandakan and proceed to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for up-close orangutan encounter. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalk to witness the feeding of orangutans from the platform in the forest. After the feeding time of the orangutan, you will be taken to the Outdoor Nursery where you will see juvenile and baby orangutans climbing and playing on the rope and in the trees.

After the outdoor nursery continues to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. These bears are the smallest of all sub-species and, like the orang utan, they are arboreal and are losing their habitat through deforestation. Sadly, they are also poached, captured for pets and used in Asian medicine. Keeper is nursing them back to health and where necessary, educating in how to be a wild bear. The intention is then to release them into the forest.

After lunch depart for a 2-day safari on the Kinabatangan River. You will be taken to Sim Sim jetty to board the boat to Abai Jungle Lodge. Enjoy a relaxing 1-hour cruise, journeying upriver. On arrival, you will check into your lodge on the riverbank and then enjoy lunch. Late afternoon head out on a safari cruise on the Kinabatangan River – at dusk you may have the chance to see proboscis monkey and other wildlife than the area is famed for. Before dinner, you will experience a night cruise to witness the glittering fireflies on the mangrove trees.

Day 12Kinabatangan River

This morning you will be awakened by the calls of gibbon monkeys and the sounds of hornbills. Embark on a river cruise to the Pitas Lake in search of wildlife. The rest of the morning is at your leisure to explore the rainforest on a boardwalk located behind the lodge or visit the village of the native “orang sungai” people and take part in a tree planting project.

After lunch heads further up the river, changing lodges for the final night in Sukau village. Switching lodges gives you a great chance to see more wildlife. On arrival take a safari cruise on the Menanggul River a tributary of the Kinabatangan River.

Day 13Sukau - Danum Valley

Today you will be driven for about 5hrs though palm oil plantations and selectively logged forest to Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located beside the Danum River on the edge of 438 square kilometres of untouched lowland rainforest. You may be lucky enough to spot wildlife on the way.

Upon arrival at the lodge, proceed to your room. After lunch you will be taken on a guided trekking along the Nature Trail for an introduction to the rainforest ecosystem.

This evening, after a slide presentation on Danum Valley Conservation Area, you will join a night safari on an open-air truck. Using a powerful spot light the guide will point out nocturnal species.

Day 14Danum Valley

Rise early this morning and enjoy a whole day in the beautiful Danum Valley. A short walk from the lodge will bring you to the canopy walkway, suspended 26 metres above the forest floor. The view is magical. In the early mornings, mist hangs over the rainforest, forming a white veil from which only the tallest treetops emerge.

After breakfast, you will walk up the trail which brings you the View Point. You will stop along the way to discover the huge variety of flora and fauna. Close to the summit, you will explore an ancient Kadazandusun burial site. Upon reaching the View Point you will be rewarded with a fantastic view over the valley. On your return, enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural Jacuzzi pool. After lunch enjoys an extended hike to look for orangutan, birds and other wildlife along nature trails or join a relaxing session of water tubing down the Danum River. As darkens falls, enjoy a guided night jungle walk in search in search of nocturnal species.

Day 15Danum Valley - Depart Lahad Datu
