Grand Tour of Sabah is a complete exploration of the natural wonders of the state of Sabah in Borneo – from the lush rain forests to the beautiful islands.

The Malaysian state of Sabah with its unspoilt nature and stunning scenery is the ideal destination for combining adventure, wildlife safari and diving.

With this trip you will visit the main attractions of Sabah including Turtle island, Kinabatangan River, Tabin Reserve, Danum Valley and Mataking Island.

Itinerary

Day 1 Arrive in Sandakan - Turtle Island

Upon arrival in Sandakan airport transfer to Sim Sim jetty to board the boat to Selingan Turtle Island.

Selingan has been designated a national park to protect the newly laid eggs and vulnerable hatchlings from predators. The journey to the island will take approximately one hour.

On arrival, leisure time to settle in your room, relax on the beach or explore the tropical island’s surrounding.

In the evening, a park ranger will escort you to watch one of the giant sea turtle laying their eggs on the beach and the release of the baby turtles into the sea (turtle sightings can never be guaranteed).

Day 2Sepilok Orangutan - Labuk Bay

Early morning, head back to Sandakan and proceed to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for up-close orangutan encounter. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalk to witness the feeding of orangutans from the platform in the forest.

After the feeding time, continue to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. These bears are the smallest of all sub-species and, like the orang utan, they are arboreal and are losing their habitat through deforestation. Sadly, they are also poached, captured for pets and used in Asian medicine. Keeper are nursing them back to health and where necessary, educating in how to be a wild bear. The intention is then to release them into the forest.

After lunch visit Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, where you can see Borneo’s indigenous proboscis monkeys. This privately-owned sanctuary located within an oil palm estate gives you the chance to observe these animals up close and personal.

Day 3Kinabatangan River - Abai

Today depart for a 2-day safari on the Kinabatangan River. You will be taken to Sandakan jetty to board the boat to Abai Jungle Lodge. Enjoy a relaxing 1 hour cruise, journeying up river. On arrival you will check in to your lodge on the riverbank and then enjoy lunch.

Late afternoon head out on a safari cruise on the Kinabatangan River – at dusk you may have the chance to see proboscis monkey and other wildlife than the area is famed for.

Day 4Abai - Sukau

This morning you will be awakened by the calls of gibbon monkeys and the sounds of hornbills. Embark on a river cruise to the Pitas Lake for birdwatching.

The rest of the morning is at your leisure to explore the rainforest on a boardwalk located behind the lodge or visit the village of the native “orang sungai” people and take part in a tree planting project.

After lunch head further up the river, changing lodges for final night at the Lodge in Sukau village. Switching lodges gives you a great chance to see more wildlife. On arrival take a safari cruise on the Menanggul River a tributary of the Kinabatangan River.

Day 5Sukau - Gomantong Caves

You will be awakened by the calls of gibbon monkeys and the sounds of hornbills. Proceed to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake for birdwatching.

Return to the Lodge for breakfast, then proceed to Gomantong Caves.

Take a late afternoon river cruise on the Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife.

Day 6Sukau - Tabin Reserve

After breakfast you will be driven for about 4-5 hours to Tabin Wildlife Reserve. Upon arrival in Tabin, check into your timber lodge at Tabin Wildlife Resort, which comes complete with private balcony, air conditioner, ceiling fan and hot water shower, a welcome luxury in the forest. Nestled within the rainforest beside the Lipad river, this lovely setting is home to a surprising variety of birds, insects and small mammals, even right beside the buildings of the resort. Discover the rich variety of jungle herbs, some endemic, used for generations by local folks for the treatment of various ailments.

Visit to Trogon Hall gallery for information about the conservation of Tabin Wildlife Reserve and briefing on birds, insects and animals that is found in this area.

In the afternoon, visit the active Lipad mud volcano which provides a mineral salt lick for wildlife. After trekking through the rainforest for 20 minutes, arrive at the elevated bare area of the mud volcano which is frequented by wildlife and birds. Climb the observation tower and admire the contrasting landscape of the bare mud volcano and its surrounding thick forest, where birds are commonly sighted. Try to identify the multitude of animal footprints here. The adventurous can try the effects of the volcanic mud, said to be responsible for a fine complexion. Trek back to the resort along elephant trail.

After dinner, enjoy a CD/Slide presentation on Tabin’s natural wonders, followed by a night safari to look out for nocturnal wildlife and birds.

Day 7Tabin Reserve

After breakfast, a drive to the core area for animal’s spotting and for photo session before trekking through the lush green rainforest known for its rich diversity of plants and animal species to visit Lipad Waterfall. Take a dip in the natural pool and enjoy a natural and refreshing shower under the waterfall. Alternatively explore the surrounding vegetation or just relax.

In the afternoon, try out the Tabin Rainforest Foot Soak made with a natural blend of herbs, to relax tired muscles after long jungle treks. In the evening, a dusk drive to look out for more nocturnal wildlife & birds coming out to look for food during this time of the day. After dinner, go for a night walk along the trail nearby the resort in search of sleeping birds, frog and nocturnal wildlife.

Day 8Tabin Reserve - Danum Valley

After breakfast you will be driven for about 3-4hrs though selectively logged forest to Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located beside the Danum River on the edge of 438 square kilometres of untouched lowland rainforest. You may be lucky enough to spot wildlife on the way.

Upon arrival at the lodge, proceed to your room. After lunch you will be taken on a guided trekking along the Nature Trail for an introduction to the rainforest ecosystem. This evening, after a slide presentation on Danum Valley Conservation Area, you will join a night safari on an open-air truck. Using a powerful spot light the guide will point out nocturnal species.

Day 9Danum Valley

Rise early this morning and enjoy a whole day in the beautiful Danum Valley. A short walk from the lodge will bring you to the canopy walkway, suspended 26 metres above the forest floor. The view is magical. In the early mornings, mist hangs over the rainforest, forming a white veil from which only the tallest treetops emerge.

After breakfast you will climb up the trail which brings you the View Point. You will stop along the way to discover the huge variety of flora and fauna. Close to the summit, you will explore an ancient Kadazandusun burial site. Upon reaching the View Point you will rewarded with a fantastic view over the valley.

On your return, enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural Jacuzzi pool.

After lunch enjoy an extended hike to look for orangutan, birds and other wildlife along nature trails, or join a relaxing session of water tubing down the Danum River.

As, darkens falls, enjoy a guided night jungle walk in search in search of nocturnal species.

Day 10Danum Valley

After breakfast you will join a guided trekking to Fairy and Serpent Falls.

After lunch, enjoy an extended hike to look for orangutan, birds and other wildlife along nature trails, or join a relaxing session of water tubing down the Danum River.

This evening, you will join another night safari on an open-air truck in search of nocturnal wildlife.

Day 11Danum Valley - Mataking Island

After breakfast you will be driven for about 5-6 hours to Semporna to board the boat to Mataking Island. Offering outstanding natural beauty, Mataking Island has unspoilt white sandy beaches, crystal waters and tropical vegetation. This pristine Island is located about 1 hour by speedboat from Semporna in the south-east of Sabah.

One side of the island is protected by a shallow sandy lagoon and on the other side the coral reef is very close ideal for snorkeling. Comfortable attractive facilities are surrounded by delightful landscape and consist of a reception area, restaurant, gift shop, PADI Centre, outdoor Jacuzzi pool and spa. Wooden cottages come with air-conditioning, ceiling fan, coffee/tea maker, hair-dryer, and private shower-styled bathroom with hot/cold water and complementary drinking water.

On arrival check in to your room, the rest of the day is free for your leisure.

Day 15Mataking Island - Depart Tawau

Boat schedule 11.00hrs and 14.00hrs. Transfer to Semporna by speedboat, then continue to Tawau for your flight to your next destination.
