Exploring Malaysia & Borneo is an amazing trip between Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo, combining the natural and cultural aspects of the country.

This adventure will take you to the cosmopolitan metropolis of Kuala Lumpur, famous for its glittering skyscrapers, to the lush rainforest in the state of Sabah in Borneo.

With this trip you will see the best of Malaysia passing through the native villages and cruising the rivers in the jungle.

Day 1 Arrive in Kuala Lumpur

Pick up: from Kuala Lumpur airport upon your arrival

Upon arrival in Kuala Lumpur, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel in the city center. Check in at 3.00pm. The rest of the day is free for your own leisure.

Day 2Kuala Lumpur sightseeing - Batu Caves

After breakfast depart for half day tour Kuala Lumpur sightseeing. Discover the old and new, starting from where the city began, which is the confluence of two rivers. A visit includes the King’s Palace, the National Museum, the National Monument and the superb buildings at the Independence Square as well as the Moorish-style railway station. Observe the contrast between historical architecture and modern skyscrapers in an abundant setting of greenery. You will also get to visit a local handicraft centre and a photo stop at the magnificent Petronas Twin Towers.

After the city tour proceeds to the countryside of Kuala Lumpur and visits the extraordinary Batu Caves, a limestone hill riddled with caves and cave temples. Climb the 272 steps to the shrine of Hindu Lord Murugan, visited by over a million pilgrims every year on the annual Thaipusam festival.
At the world famous Royal Selangor pewter factory, learn about the production methods of this pioneering pewter maker and enjoy a short guided tour of the factory where you can watch skilled artisans at work. The tour concludes with a visit to a batik factory and learn how local artists create this exquisite fabric.

Day 3Kuala Lumpur - Taman Negara

Proceed to the waiting area for the transfer to Taman Negara (Hotel Istana). At 0900hrs depart by shuttle bus to Kuala Tahan (approx. 3.5 hour-drive). Upon arrival in Kuala Tahan, cross the river by boat to Mutiara Taman Negara Resort. On arrival check into your chalet and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

After dinner proceed on a guided night jungle walk. Discover the side of the jungle which comes alive at night. Familiarize yourself with nocturnal plants and insects and savour a chance to spot animals up close at the Observation Hide.

Day 4Taman Negara

This morning hike up the 334m Teresek Hill for panoramic view of Gunung Tahan and the magnificent forest canopies that cover the hills and valleys.

Then, proceed to the Canopy Walkway, the world’s longest suspension bridge, 40 meters above ground and 530 meters long.

After lunch, cruise along Sungai Tahan to relish the riverside flora and fauna and dip into the refreshing cascades at Lata Berkoh which form a natural Jacuzzi.

Day 5Taman Negara - Kuala Lumpur

After breakfast depart with shuttle bus to Istana Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Return to your hotel and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

Day 6Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre

After breakfast proceed to Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre, located in the hinterland in the centre of Pahang. The only one of its kind in Malaysia, the park is a natural habitat for a number of endemic elephants rescued from the wild.

You will get a chance to observe the time and care that goes into the rehabilitation of these majestic pachyderms and the conducted activities here are meant to educate the public about the importance of protecting the species which will become extinct due to the destruction of habitat and the natural environment by human beings.

During the baby elephants bathing session, you might be able to jump into the river and give them a good scrub!*

Day 7Fly to Sandakan

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Sandakan. On arrival in Sandakan, transfer to your hotel in Sepilok.

Day 8Selingan Turtle Island

Today, transfer to Sim Sim jetty to board the boat to Selingan Turtle Island. Selingan has been designated a national park to protect the newly laid eggs and vulnerable hatchlings from predators. The journey to the island will take approximately one hour.

On arrival, leisure time to settle in your room, relax on the beach or explore the tropical island’s surrounding. In the evening, a park ranger will escort you to watch one of the giant sea turtle laying their eggs on the beach and the release of the baby turtles into the sea (turtle sightings can never be guaranteed).

Day 9Sepilok Orangutan - Kinabatangan River

Early morning heads back to the mainland and proceed to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for up-close orangutan encounter. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalk to witness the feeding of orangutans from the platform in the forest. After the feeding time of the orangutan, you will be taken to the Outdoor Nursery where you will see juvenile and baby orangutans climbing and playing on the rope and in the trees.

After the outdoor nursery continues to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. These bears are the smallest of all sub-species and, like the orangutan, they are arboreal and are losing their habitat through deforestation. Sadly, they are also poached, captured for pets and used in Asian medicine. Keeper is nursing them back to health and where necessary, educating in how to be a wild bear. The intention is then to release them into the forest.

After Sepilok depart for a 2-day safari on the Kinabatangan River. You will be taken to Sim Sim jetty to board the boat to Abai Jungle Lodge. Enjoy a relaxing 1-hour cruise, journeying up the river. On arrival, you will check into your lodge on the riverbank and then enjoy lunch.

Late afternoon head out on a safari cruise on the Kinabatangan River – at dusk you may have the chance to see proboscis monkey and other wildlife than the area is famed for.
Before dinner you will experience a night cruise to witness the glittering fireflies on the mangrove trees.

Day 10Kinabatangan River

This morning you will be awakened by the calls of gibbon monkeys and the sounds of hornbills. Embark on a river cruise to the Pitas Lake in search of wildlife. The rest of the morning is at your leisure to explore the rainforest on a boardwalk located behind the lodge or visit the village of the native “orang sungai” people and take part in a tree planting project.

After lunch head further up the river, changing lodges for final night in Sukau village. Switching lodges gives you a great chance to see more wildlife. On arrival take a safari cruise on the Menanggul River a tributary of the Kinabatangan River.

Day 11Sukau - Danum valley

Today you will be driven for about 5 hours to Danum Valley with a couple of stop en route. On arriving at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located beside the Danum River, the view is immediately breathtaking. The beautiful unspoilt primary rainforest canopy reaches up to over 30 meters tall.

The entire Danum Valley Conservation Area is a primary rainforest, which means it has never been logged before and is completely untouched. After a brief orientation, you will be given free time to freshen up before lunch. In the afternoon you will be taken on a guided trekking along the Nature Trail for an introduction to the rainforest ecosystem.

This evening, after a slide presentation on Danum Valley Conservation Area, you will join a night safari on an open-air truck. Using a powerful spot light the guide will point out nocturnal species.

Day 12Danum Valley

Rise early this morning and enjoy a whole day in the beautiful Danum Valley. A short walk from the lodge will bring you to the canopy walkway, suspended 26 metres above the forest floor. The view is magical. In the early mornings, mist hangs over the rainforest, forming a white veil from which only the tallest treetops emerge.

After breakfast you will climb up the trail which brings you the View Point. You will stop along the way to discover the huge variety of flora and fauna. Close to the summit, you will explore an ancient Kadazandusun burial site. Upon reaching the View Point you will rewarded with a fantastic view over the valley. On your return, enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural Jacuzzi pool.

After lunch enjoy an extended hike to look for orangutan, birds and other wildlife along nature trails, or join a relaxing session of water tubing down the Danum River. As, darkens falls, enjoy a guided night jungle walk in search in search of nocturnal species.

Day 13Danum Valley - Depart Lahad Datu

This morning enjoy a short jungle walk. After lunch, check out and transfer to Lahad Datu airport for your flight to your next destination.
