An amazing trip across Sabah & Sarawak, the two Malaysian states situated in northern part of the island of Borneo.

With this itinerary, you will visit the ancient head hunters’ villages, trek though pristine rain forest in Danum Valley, cruise along the Kinabatangan River in search of wildlife and hike through misty montane forest before reaching Borneo’s highest mountain – the legendary Kinabalu.

Day 1Arrive in Kuching - city sightseeing

Pick up: from the airport upon your arrival (preferably before noon)

Upon arrival in Kuching you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel (preferably arrive before noon). Afternoon proceed for Kuching city sightseeing. Tour highlights includes Chinatown, the Cat Statue (Kuching means ‘Cat’ in Malay), the colourful Tua Pek Kong Chinese Temple, the Civic Centre Viewing platform and the world famous museum which displays some great tribal artefacts. Pass by the golden-domed city Mosque and through the Old Kuching, crammed with spice dealers and textile shops. Admire the colonial buildings of the White Rajah Era such as the Pavilion, the Square Tower, the Court House, the Charles Brooke Monument, the Astana and the Post Office.

After the city sightseeing you will be boarding a pontoon boat for a scenic river cruise. The very best way to see and enjoy historic Kuching is from the Sarawak River, the main artery around which the city has grown. Our Sarawak River Cruises give you a view of the city and its surroundings that is impossible to experience from dry land. From the comfort of our purpose-built pontoon boats you will enjoy unobstructed views of every aspect of traditional life on the river.

Day 2Semenggoh Orangutan - Lemanak River Longhouse

This 3-day tour will take you to the remote Lemanak River and Batang Ai Reservoir to experience the local Iban culture. You will be driven for about 4.5 hours passing through lush green countryside dotted with padi fields, pepper gardens and rubber plantations, and flanked by rugged jungle-clad mountains. There will be stops along the way for visiting Semenggoh Orangutan Centre, Serian farmer’s market and a pepper garden where you can have the opportunity to see rare carnivorous pitcher plants. Another stop for lunch will be in Lachau town at a roadside bazaar.

Upon arrival in Lemanak jetty (mid-afternoon) you will be boarding a longboat and cruising up the Lemanak River, passing through typical Borneo countryside with a longhouse tucked behind almost every bend in the river. Explore the Longhouse “an entire village under one roof’ and enjoy a native dinner prepared by Ibans. After dinner, witness traditional dances and join in the tribal revelry in the Longhouse. Here is a chance to try the local rice wine, tuak.

Overnight in the longhouse – You will be spending the night at the ruai (the longhouse common room). As for the washroom / toilet facilities you will be sharing with the Ibans.


Day 3Lemanak _ Batang Ai

This morning you will enjoy a demonstration of the native activities such as blowpipe for hunting, followed by a short nature walk to learn about some local medicinal plants. Enjoy a lunch in traditional Iban style; food will be cooked in bamboo tubes over an open fire. After lunch, bathe in the pool or relax at the waterside.

Return downriver by longboat and transfer to Batang Ai jetty to board the ferry to the Resort. Cross Batang Ai Hydro Lake and arrive the Aiman Batang Ai Resort & Retreat. The rest of the day is free for your own leisure. Guests of the resort can enjoy water sports such as canoeing and kayaking.

Day 4Batang Ai - Fly to Kota Kinabalu

After breakfast you will be driven to Kuching airport via the same route. Lunch is served en route. Fly to Kota Kinabalu. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel.

Day 5Poring Hot Springs

Today you will be picked up from your hotel and taken on a day trip to Kinabalu Park and Poring. You will be driven for 2.5 hours across mountainous Crocker Range with panoramic view of the countryside and soaring hills. En route to Kinabalu Park, visit the Nabalu Market where you can find local handicraft and tropical fruits.

Upon arrival in Poring proceed to the 41m high Canopy walk which offers a spectacular view of the rainforest and dip in a steaming Japanese style bathtub filled with running sulfured water rising from the earth’s depth.

After Poring you will be transferred to the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy a guided nature walk in the park and discover the amazing insectivorous pitcher plants and other exotic plants in the Mountain Garden.

Day 6Climb Mount Kinabalu

After breakfast, check in and register at the Kinabalu Park’s office and begin your climb up to Laban Rata. Ascend for approximately 5-8 hours (depending on individual fitness level) through diverse forest which is home to many species of plants. No special mountaineering skills are required, but a certain level of fitness is essential.

The rest of the afternoon is free to enjoy this captivating setting and prepare for tomorrow’s summit climb.

Day 7Climb Mount Kinabalu - Kota Kinabalu

Set off for the challenging summit trek in the dark hours of the morning in time to catch a mesmerising sunrise (approx. 2.5-3.5 hours). The views from the summit really are spectacular and it makes the whole adventure worth it.

Afterwards, descent back to Laban Rata Restaurant for breakfast and trek down to the Timpohon Gate where a mini bus will be waiting to return you to Kota Kinabalu.

Day 8Fly to Sandakan - Sepilok Orangutan - Kinabatangan River

Early morning, you will be transferred to the airport for a short flight to Sandakan. Upon arrival head to Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre for up-close orangutan encounter. Walk ten minutes through the rainforest on wooden boardwalk to witness the feeding of orangutans from the platform in the forest.

After Sepilok you will be taken to the jetty to board the boat to Abai Jungle Lodge. Enjoy a relaxing 1 hour cruise, journeying up river. On arrival you will check in to your lodge on the riverbank and then enjoy lunch. Late afternoon head out on a safari cruise on the Kinabatangan River – at dusk you may have the chance to see proboscis monkey and other wildlife than the area is famed for. Before dinner you will experience a night cruise to witness the glittering fireflies on the mangrove trees.

Day 9Kinabatangan River

You will be awakened by the calls of gibbon monkeys and the sounds of hornbills. Embark on another river cruise to the Pitas Lake for birdwatching. The rest of the morning is at your leisure to explore the rainforest on a boardwalk located behind the lodge or visit the village of the native “orang sungai”.

After lunch head further up the river, changing lodges for final night at the Kinabatangan Riverside Lodge in Sukau village. Switching lodges gives you a great chance to see more wildlife. On arrival embark on a safari cruise on the Menanggul River a tributary of the Kinabatangan River.

Day 10Sukau - Danum Valley

Today you will be driven for about 5 hours to Danum Valley with a couple of stop en route.If you are lucky, you can spot wildlife along the way.

On arriving at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge, located beside the Danum River, the view is immediately breathtaking. The beautiful unspoilt primary rainforest canopy reaches up to over 30 meters tall. The entire Danum Valley Conservation Area is a primary rainforest, which means it has never been logged before and is completely untouched. After a brief orientation, you will be given free time to freshen up before lunch.

In the afternoon you will be taken on a guided trekking along the Nature Trail for an introduction to the rainforest ecosystem. This evening, after a slide presentation on Danum Valley Conservation Area, you will join a night safari on an open-air truck. Using a powerful spot light the guide will point out nocturnal species.

Day 11Danum Valley

Rise early this morning and enjoy a whole day in the beautiful Danum Valley. A short walk from the lodge will bring you to the canopy walkway, suspended 26 metres above the forest floor. The view is magical. In the early mornings, mist hangs over the rainforest, forming a white veil from which only the tallest treetops emerge.

After breakfast you will climb up the trail which brings you the View Point. You will stop along the way to discover the huge variety of flora and fauna. Close to the summit, you will explore an ancient Kadazandusun burial site. Upon reaching the View Point you will rewarded with a fantastic view over the valley. On your return, enjoy a refreshing dip in the natural Jacuzzi pool.

After lunch enjoy an extended hike to look for orangutan, birds and other wildlife along nature trails, or join a relaxing session of water tubing down the Danum River. As, darkens falls, enjoy a guided night jungle walk in search in search of nocturnal species.

Day 12Danum Valley - depart Lahad Datu

This morning enjoy a short jungle walk. After lunch, check out and transfer to Lahad Datu airport.
